    The Lost Numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42

    4 8 15 16 23 42.

These are the numbers that must be typed into the Dharma Initiative terminal, in the bunker, on the Island, on the television show "Lost".  These numbers are also typed into Search engines, and as a result, people(such as yourself!) are often brought to this website, because I've written a few entries about these numbers.  Since so many people find themselves here when they search for those numbers, I thought I should provide some useful information.

Every 108 minutes, someone must type these numbers into the terminal, and push the execute button.    We know this because of an orientation film left by the Dharma Initiative.

Nobody knows exactly what happens if the numbers aern't entered into the terminal- the filmstrip clearly states, however, that the numbers Must be entered, and there are negative consequences if they are not.  On one occasion, the timer reached zero and the numbers weren't completely entered.  A series of symbols began to appear on the 108-minute timer.  The numbers were entered before the last image appeared, and the timer reset as normal.

Nobody knows what the terminal is connected to, but the Orientation Film clearly states that the terminal must not be used for communication.  However,  Walt and Michael have used the terminal to communicate with each other.

There are many theores regarding the nature of the numbers.  Almost a year ago, I documented my crackpot theory about prime numbers.  In retrospect, it's kinda scary how insane I was.  The best current theory about the nature of the numbers is that they are values for latitude/longitude. that particular point on the map happens to be along the flight path from Australia to Los Angeles (link is currently broke).

I've included a bunch of links in this post to LostPedia - The Lost Encyclopedia, which is a great source for all Lost-related information.  enjoy!
